NCD – Identifying Isolated Networks

What is an Isolated Network?

Navisite Cloud Director® (NCD) allows virtual DataCenter (vDC) and vApp networks to be configured as isolated, with no connection to a parent network. While there are appropriate circumstances for creating an isolated network (an isolated vApp network, for example, might be used for back-end communication between a database and a server), they can cause connectivity problems in certain situations (configuring a VPN connection, for example). This article details methods for identifying isolated networks in such situations.

Identifying an Isolated vDC Network

An isolated vDC network provides no connectivity outside of the vDC. It only connects its own vApps (and their VMs) together.

To determine whether a vDC network is isolated:

At the vDataCenter page:

Click Diagram in the "Current Status" section of the appropriate vDataCenter page. If the vDC is isolated, the diagram displays no connection to the Edge Gateway.

At the vDC Network page:

To view the vDC Network page for a vDC, click Networks in the "Children" section of the vDataCenter page, and click the appropriate vDC network name in the list.

If a vDC network is isolated, its vDC Network page displays an "Isolated vDC Network" heading at the top of the page.

Click Network Config in the "Configuration" section of the appropriate vDC Network page. If the vDC network is isolated, the "Connection" value is "None (Isolated)."

Identifying an Isolated vApp Network

An isolated vApp network provides no connectivity outside of the vApp; it only connects VMs together, with no connection to other networks (i.e., to a vDC network, other vApps, or the internet). Only communication within the vApp is possible. VMs in an isolated vApp are unable to utilize external network resources, and are inaccessible except by console access.

There are several methods for determining whether a vApp network is isolated:

At the vApp page:

Click Networks in the "Children" section of the appropriate vApp page. If a listed vApp network is isolated, the "Network Type" value is "Isolated vApp Network," and the "Connection" value is "None (Isolated)."

At the VM page:

To determine whether a VM is on an isolated vApp network, click Network Interfaces in the "Hardware" section of the appropriate VM page. If the VM is on an isolated vApp network, no "vDC Net IP" value is displayed.

Click Diagram in the "Current Status" section of the appropriate VM page. If the VM is on an isolated vApp network, the diagram displays no outside connection to the vApp network.

At the vApp Network page:

To view the vApp Network page for a VM, click Network Interfaces in the "Hardware" section of the VM page, and click the appropriate vApp network name in the list.

If a VM is on an isolated vApp network, its vApp Network page displays an "Isolated vApp Network" heading at the top of the page.

Click Network Config in the "Configuration" section of the appropriate vApp Network page. If the VM is on an isolated vApp network, the "Connection" value is "None (Isolated)."
