NCD – Enabling the vShield Endpoint Driver for Windows VMs

This article details the procedure for updating Microsoft® Windows® virtual machines (VMs) in production environments to enable the vShield Endpoint driver in VMware® Tools.

Enabling the vShield Endpoint driver allows Trend Micro antivirus software to operate properly.

Notes: This procedure applies to Microsoft Windows VMs only.

This procedure requires that you know the exact name of the VM to be updated.

Verifying Your VMware Tools Version


Before updating your VM to enable the vShield Endpoint driver, verify that the VM utilizes the latest version of VMware Tools as follows:
  1. Log into Navisite Cloud Director® (NCD). The NCD Dashboard page appears.

  2. Click VMs beneath the "Assets" heading in the navigation pane at the left side of the page. The VMs page appears, displaying a list of available VMs.

  3. Locate and click the desired Windows VM name in the list. The VM detail page appears.

  4. Verify that the VM is powered on. If necessary, click the Power On (Play) button at the top of the page.



  5. Click VM Config beneath the "Configuration" heading to display the VM Configuration settings.

  6. Verify that the listed "VMware Tools:" version is accompanied by a green checkmark, indicating that the latest version of VMware Tools is installed.



    If the latest version of VMware Tools is not installed, see Verifying and Updating VMware Tools for a VM for details on updating the VM to the latest version of VMware Tools. After updating, repeat this procedure to verify that the latest version of VMware Tools is in use.
Note: The vShield Endpoint driver is not enabled by default when the latest version of VMware Tools is installed. The following procedure details enabling the vShield Endpoint driver.

Enabling the vShield Endpoint Driver


To update your VM to enable the vShield Endpoint driver:
  1. Log into Navisite Cloud Director. The NCD Dashboard page appears.

  2. Click VMs beneath the "Assets" heading in the navigation pane at the left side of the page. The VMs page appears, displaying a list of available VMs.

  3. Locate and click the desired Windows VM name in the list. The VM page appears.

  4. Verify that the VM is powered on. If necessary, click the Power On (Play) button at the top of the page.



  5. At the VM page, click View in vCloud to view the VMware vCloud® Director Virtual Machines table.

  6. In vCloud Director, open a console session by clicking the appropriate VM icon in the "Console" column of the Virtual Machines table.


  7. Switch to the console window and verify that the vShield Endpoint driver has not yet been enabled, as follows:

    1. Open a command prompt and enter "msinfo32". The System Information window appears.

    2. In the System Information window's navigation pane, expand the "Software Environment" category and click System Drivers. A list of system drivers is displayed.

    3. Verify that "vsepflt" is not present in the system driver list. If "vsepflt" appears in the list, the vShield Endpoint driver has already been enabled.

  8. In the vCloud Director Virtual Machines table, click to highlight the row for the appropriate VM, and click the "Gear" icon at the top of the table.


  9. Select "Install VMWare Tools" from the resulting menu, and switch to the console window. If AutoPlay is enabled, the AutoPlay pop-up window appears in the console session.

  10. If AutoPlay is not enabled, open Windows Explorer in the console session and navigate to the CD drive containing VMWare Tools.

  11. In the console session, click "Run setup64.exe" in the AutoPlay pop-up window, or double-click "setup64.exe" in Windows Explorer. The VMWare Tools Setup installation window appears.

  12. Click Next> to begin the installation.

  13. Select the "Modify" radio button and click Next>.

  14. Expand the Custom Setup navigation tree to display the "VMCI Driver" category.

  15. Click the vShield Drivers drop-down menu and select "Will be installed on local hard drive."



  16. Click Next>.

  17. Click Change to begin the installation.

  18. When the installation is completed, click Finish.

  19. Verify that the vShield Endpoint driver has been enabled, as follows:

    1. Open a command prompt and enter "msinfo32". The System Information
      window appears.

    2. In the System Information window's navigation pane, expand the "Software Environment" category and click System Drivers. A list of system drivers is displayed.

    3. Verify that "vsepflt" is present in the system driver list, indicating that the vShield Endpoint driver has been enabled.

  20. In the console window, select Restart from the Windows Start menu to restart the VM.
