NCD – Applying Anti-Virus Protection to VMs

Anti-virus (AV) protection for Microsoft® Windows® VMs in Navisite Cloud Director® (NCD) can be configured using the Trend Micro Deep Security self-service portal. The AV service runs at the hypervisor level of NCD, making the installation of agents on Windows VMs unnecessary.

Note: Anti-virus functionality may only be available in some vClouds. To identify the vClouds that support anti-virus protection, click NCD Services in the "Services" section of the navigation bar on the left side of the page to display the NCD Services page, and open the "Antivirus" section. vClouds indicating a status of "Enabled" support the AV service.

Prerequisite: vShield Endpoint Driver

Anti-virus protection requires that Microsoft Windows VMs have VMware® Tools installed, with the vShield Endpoint driver enabled. To enable the vShield Endpoint driver in VMware Tools for Windows VMs in production environments, see Enabling the vShield Endpoint Driver for Windows VMs.

Trend Micro Console Access

Navisite provisions the AV by providing a Trend Micro console for your account, through which you can configure and manage VM protection. To access the console:
  1. At the NCD Dashboard page, click NCD Services in the "Services" section of the navigation bar on the left side of the page to display the NCD Servicespage.

  2. At the NCD Services page, scroll down and click Antivirus to display the "Antivirus" section.

  3. In the "Antivirus" section, click the Configure button corresponding to the appropriate vCloud. The Trend Micro Deep Security Manager dashboard opens in a separate browser tab.

  4. Click Help in the upper right corner of the dashboard view for Trend Micro online help content.

Applying Anti-Virus Protection Within Navisite Cloud Director

  2. Scroll down to the "Configuration" section and click Antivirus.

  3. In the "Antivirus" section, click the "gear" icon in the upper right corner to display the Manage Antivirus page.

  4. At the Manage Antivirus page, select the Enabled checkbox.

  5. Select the desired security profile for the VM from the "Security Profile" drop-down list. The selected value is used as the Trend Micro console's AV "Policy" for the VM.

  6. Click Save to enable anti-virus protection for the VM.

  7. Once anti-virus protection is enabled, click the Trend Micro portal Configure button to launch the Trend Micro Deep Security console for additional detail and configuration options.

Applying Anti-Virus Protection Using the Trend Micro Console

The Trend Micro Deep Security console opens in a new browser tab, and allows you to configure, review, and manage VM protection through "Dashboard," "Alerts," "Events/Reports," "Policies," "Administration," and "Computers" tabs. The "Computers" tab allows you to protect NCD VMs.

Access the Trend Micro documentation for details on AV usage, features, and functionality by clicking Help in the upper right corner of the portal.

Searching NCD for AV-Protected VMs

VMs that are configured for anti-virus protection are tagged with the "Antivirus" feature tag and can be located using the NCD search function. Performing a search for tag:Antivirus results in a list VMs that have anti-virus protection in place. Click any listed VM in the search results to navigate to its VM detail page.

The "Antivirus" feature tag is also applied to vApps containing VMs with AV service in place. Click a vApp's "Antivirus" feature tag to navigate to the vApp diagram indicating these VMs. Click a VM's "Antivirus" feature tag to navigate to the VM's "Antivirus" section at the VM detail page.
