NCD – Locating VM Backups

Navisite Cloud Director (NCD) allows you to locate existing virtual machine (VM) backups that are available for restore. You review a system-wide list of VM backups, or view backups for a specific VM.

Reviewing a System-Wide Backup List

To view a tabular listing of all configured NCD VM backups:
  1. At the Dashboard page, click BACKUPS in the "Services" section of the navigation bar on the left side of the page. The Backups page appears.

  2. Click NCD Backups in the "General" section to display your configured VM backups.

Filtering the Backup List

Click All VMs to display all configured NCD VM backups in the list. Click Existing VMs to populate the list only with backups for non-deleted VMs. Click Deleted VMs to populate the list only with backups for deleted VMs.

To filter the backup list using a text value, enter the desired text in the "Filter" field above the list. The displayed contents of the list change according to the entered text as you type it.

Viewing Backup History Details

To view a detailed backup history, click the desired Backup Name in the list. The Backup details page appears.

The following information is provided for each backup instance listed at the Backup details page:
  • Status – the "Status" indicator provides a green check mark for successful backups, or a red X for backups that encountered an error.

  • Date – provides the date and time of the backup.

  • Level – the level of the backup, which may be one of the following:

    • Full – The first backup performed is a full disk backup. It is the only full backup performed, and becomes the baseline to which all subsequent backups are applied.

    • Incremental – Daily backups (performed after the initial full backup) are incremental, including only data that is new or has changed since the previous backup.

    • Synthetic Full – Weekly backups apply the incremental backups to the full backup to compose a synthetic full backup. This backup is then used as the base for future incremental backups.

  • Result – the result of the backup ("Running" or "Success," for example).

  • Offsite – "Yes" (remote backup in addition to local backup) or "No" (local backup only).

Viewing Backups for a Specific VM

To view configured VM backups for a specific VM:
  1. Log into Navisite Cloud Director.

  2. Click vApps in the navigation bar on the left side of the page. The vApps page appears, displaying a list of configured vApps.

  3. In the vApps page list, locate and click on the name of the vApp containing the desired VM. The vApp detail page appears.

  4. In the "Children" section of the vApp detail page, click VMs to display a list of VMs within the vApp.

  5. In the "Name" column, click the name of the desired VM. The VM detail page appears.

  6. At the VM detail page, scroll down to the "Configuration" section and click Backups to display the "Backups" subsection.

The "Backups" subsection of the VM detail page displays a table of all existing backups. Each listed backup provides the following information:

  • Date – provides the date and time of the backup.

  • Level – the level of the backup, which may be one of the following:

    • Incremental – Daily backups (performed after the initial full backup) are incremental, including only data that is new or has changed since the previous backup.

    • Synthetic Full – Weekly backups apply the incremental backups to the full backup to compose a synthetic full backup. This backup is then used as the base for future incremental backups.

  • Result – the result of the backup ("Running" or "Success," for example).

  • Offsite – "Yes" (remote backup in addition to local backup) or "No" (local backup only).
You can also configure VM backups at the VM detail page. See Backing Up and Restoring VMs for details.

Locating Backup-Enabled VMs Using NCD Search

VMs that are configured for backup are tagged with the "Backup" feature tag and can be located using the NCD search function. Performing a search for tag:Backup results in a list of VMs that have backups enabled. Click any listed VM in the search results to navigate to its VM detail page.
