NCD – Viewing and Editing vApp Network Properties


Virtual Application (vApp) networks are viewed and edited using the vApp Network detail page for the appropriate vApp.

To view the vApp Network detail page:
  1. Display the appropriate vApp detail page as directed in Viewing and Updating vApp Configuration and Status.

  2. Scroll down to the "Children" section and click Networks to display networks associated with the vApp. vApp networks are indicated by the "Network Type" column in the "Networks" table.

  3. Click the desired vApp network name in the list to display the vApp Network detail page.
OR
  1. Display the appropriate vApp detail page as directed in Viewing and Updating vApp Configuration and Status.

  2. Scroll down to the "Current Status" section and click Diagram to display the vApp diagram (if necessary).

  3. Click the graphical representation of the desired vApp network in the diagram to display the vApp Network pop-up summary.




  4. Click the vApp network name in the pop-up summary to display the vApp Network detail page.

  1. At the Navisite Cloud Director Dashboard page, click NCD Network in the "Views" section of the navigation bar on the left side of the page to display the NCD Network diagram.

  2. Click the graphical representation of the desired vApp network in the diagram to display the vApp Network pop-up summary.

  4. Click the vApp network name in the pop-up summary to display the vApp Network detail page.

The vApp Network detail page displays:
  • Status – the vApp network status condition (e.g., "Ready," "Deployed").

  • Gateway – the vApp network's gateway IP address. The gateway address is the IP address serving as a point of contact from within the network to other networks or the internet.

  • Netmask – a 32-bit subnet mask used to divide an IP address into subnets and specify the network's available hosts. The netmask determines the number of IP addresses that are contained within the network identified by the Gateway address. Navisite Cloud Director network masks are always 255.255.255.0, which results in networks with 254 usable IP addresses.

  • Current Status – vApp network status information, including:

    • vApp Network Diagram – Clicking objects in the vApp network diagram provides pop-up summaries for vApp networks and virtual machines (VMs), which in turn link to further detail screens.

      The Legend button provides a summary key to the images in the diagram.

      The diagram's VM icon includes symbols indicating power state (running, stopped) of virtual machines (VMs) within the vApp.

    • Task History – displays a subset of system task history, relating to actions taken on the vApp network's configuration. See How do I monitor my tasks? for more information.


  • IP Allocation – vApp internet protocol (IP) address allocation information, including:

    • IP Addressing – allows you to add Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Static IP address ranges to the vApp network, and view, edit, or delete currently assigned IP address ranges.

      Note: Only one DHCP address range may be defined for a vApp network.

      The graph in the "IP Addressing" section represents allocated IP address ranges with a colored bar. Hover the mouse cursor over the bar to view details on existing static (green bar) and DHCP (blue bar) range allocation and usage.

      Enabling/Disabling DHCP
      DHCP is a protocol that is commonly used to dynamically assign IP addresses. When virtual machines (VMs) on the network are powered on, they are assigned an IP address from a pool of addresses reserved specifically for DHCP.

      To enable or disable DHCP for the vApp network, click the "gear" icon to the right of the "DHCP Enabled" field at the top of the "IP Addressing" section, select Yes or No from the drop-down menu, and click the green check mark button.

      Adding IP Ranges To add a new static or DHCP IP address range to the network:

      Click the desired unallocated area in the graph, and select Add DHCP range here or Add static IP range here, as desired. A new entry is added to the IP address range table below the graph, and can be defined as necessary.

      OR

      Click +Add DHCP Range or +Add Static IP Range below the graph. A new entry is added to the IP address range table below the graph, and can be defined as necessary.

      In the "Range" column of the newly added IP address range table entry, define the starting and ending IP addresses in the new address range.

      DHCP and static IP ranges cannot overlap. A new static IP range that is adjacent to an existing static IP range will be combined with the existing range.

      Click the green check mark button to complete the definition.

      Specifying DHCP Range Lease Times To specify the default time period for which a client can request and hold a lease on an IP address in a DHCP range, click the "gear" icon in the "Default Lease" column for the DHCP range, enter the desired amount of time (in seconds) in the resulting field, and click the green check mark button.

      To specify the maximum time period for which a client can request and hold a lease on an IP address in a DHCP range, click the "gear" icon in the "Max Lease" column for the DHCP range, enter the desired amount of time (in seconds) in the resulting field, and click the green check mark button.

      Editing IP Ranges To change the IP address range for an existing definition, click the "gear" icon to the right of the address range value in the "Range" column, enter the IP addresses in the range as desired, and click the green check mark button to complete the definition.

      Deleting IP Ranges To delete an existing IP address range in the table, click Delete for the desired table entry. A confirmation pop-up window appears. To complete the deletion, click Delete IP range (for a static range) or Delete DHCP range in the pop-up window.

    • Allocated IPs – presents a tabular display of IP addresses allocated in the vApp network. Links in the "Using this IP" and "vApp" columns allow you to view detail pages for the associated networks, vApps, and VMs.


  • Services – vApp network services information, including:

    • Firewall – the "Firewall" section indicates the vApp's firewall service status and default action, and lists firewall rules in effect. Click the "gear" icon in the upper right of the "Firewall" section to add, edit, or remove firewall rules.

    • NAT – the "NAT" section displays the vApp network's network address translation (NAT) service status and NAT rules. See Configuring NAT Rules for more information.

    • Static Routing – the "Static Routing" section allows you to add static routes to edge gateways to define the path to an otherwise inaccessible network, or to override the default route to a network.

  •  

  • vApp network Configuration information, including:

    • Network Config – provides the following information about the vApp network:

      Connection – a network's connection is a parent network or device to which it is connected to provide an external connection or additional network services.

      Retain IP/MAC Resources – when this field is set to "Yes," the public IP and MAC address of the network's connection are retained when the vApp is stopped. If this field is set to "No," the connection's public IP address and MAC address are relinquished to an availability pool when the vApp is stopped. To define this setting, click the "gear" icon to the right of the displayed setting, select "Yes" or "No" as desired, and click the green check mark button.

      Primary DNS – the IP address of the vApp network's primary domain name server (DNS). The DNS maintains a directory of domain names and translates them to IP addresses. To change the primary DNS address, click the "pencil" icon to the right of the displayed address, enter the desired address (in x.x.x.x IP notation format), and click the green check mark button.

      Secondary DNS – the IP address of the vApp network's secondary (backup) DNS. To change the secondary DNS address, click the "pencil" icon to the right of the displayed address, enter the desired address (in x.x.x.x IP notation format), and click the green check mark button.

      DNS Suffix – the Domain Name Server (DNS) suffix for VMs on the vApp network. The DNS suffix is used in DNS name registration and DNS name resolution (e.g., yourdomain.com). If the DNS suffix is not configured, the DNS name of the local active directory (AD) is used. To set or change the DNS suffix, click the "pencil" icon to the right of the "DNS Suffix" field, enter the desired DNS suffix (e.g., yourdomain.com), and click the green check mark button.

    • Object Properties – the "Object Properties" section provides the vApp network's Description, Owner, vCloud, vDataCenter, vApp, and Universally Unique Identifier (UUID) values.

      Description – the vApp network's description. To change the description, click the "pencil" icon to the right of the displayed description, enter the desired description, and click the green check mark button.

Downloading Table Data

To download any displayed table data as a .csv file, click the "Download" icon above the table.

Adding Tags to a vApp Network

Tags are keywords that you can use to identify or logically group items. They are useful in finding items through the universal search or a table’s filter.

Click the Add Tag button at the top of the vApp Network detail page to add a tag to the vApp network item.

Viewing the vApp Network in vCloud Director

Click the View in vCloud button at the top of the vApp Network detail page to launch VMware vCloud Director® and use the interface to view the vApp network. See View in vCloud for more information.

Deleting the vApp Network

The Delete button at the top of the vApp Network detail page allows you to delete the vApp network from your Navisite Cloud Director environment.

Note: A vApp network can be deleted only after all of its connected VMs have been deleted. Once any connected VMs have been deleted, the vApp Network detail page's Delete button becomes active and available for use.

Click Delete at the top of the vApp Network detail page to delete the vApp network, and click OK to confirm the deletion.
