NCD – Editing VM Properties


Navisite Cloud Director® (NCD) Virtual Machine (VM) properties can be edited at the VM detail page. Navigate to the VM detail page as follows:
  1. Log into Navisite Cloud Director.

  2. Click vApps in the navigation bar on the left side of the NCD Dashboard page. The vApps page appears, displaying a list of configured vApps.



  3. In the vApps detail page list, locate and click on the name of the vApp containing the VM to be edited. The vApp detail page appears.

  4. In the "Children" section of the vApp detail page, click VMs to display a list of VMs within the vApp.



  5. In the "Name" column, click the name of the VM to be configured. The VM detail page appears.

Editing the VM Name

To change a VM's name:
  1. At the VM detail page, click the "pencil" icon displayed to the right of the current VM name.



  2. Enter the desired VM name in the resulting text field.

  3. Click the green check mark to save the new VM name, or click X to cancel the change.

  4. Note: The VM name cannot be blank, and must be unique within the vApp.

Editing the VM Description

To change a VM's description:
  1. In the "Configuration" section of the VM detail page, click Object Properties to display the VM description.

  2. Click the "pencil" icon displayed to the right of the current "Description" value.



  3. Enter the desired VM description in the resulting text field.

  4. Click the green check mark to save the new VM description, or click X to cancel the change.

Adjusting VM Memory


Notes: Normally, a VM must be in a powered off state in order to adjust its memory amount. A VM’s memory can be adjusted while it is powered on if "hot-adding" has been enabled for the VM and if its operating system supports this feature.

A VM must use a virtual hardware version of 7 (vmx-7) or later in order to hot add memory.

Note also that memory cannot be decreased without first powering off the VM.

To adjust a VM's memory amount:
  1. If necessary, verify that the VM is powered off, as follows:

    1. Shut down the VM by selecting Shutdown from the Power Off (Stop) drop-down menu at the top of the VM detail page.



    2. Power off the VM by selecting Power Off from the Power Off (Stop) drop-down menu at the top of the VM detail page.



  2. Click the "gear" icon in the "Memory" section at the top of the VM detail page.



  3. Specify the VM's memory amount in the resulting "Memory" section fields, as follows:

    1. Specify the numeric memory amount size in the "Memory" field. This amount must be greater than zero (0) and less than the vDC’s quota, up to VM memory limits.

    2. Select MB (megabytes) or GB (gigabytes) from the "Memory" section drop-down menu to specify the unit of memory amount measurement.

    3. Note: Navisite Cloud Director allows a maximum memory amount of 128 GB per VM.

  4. Click the green check mark to specify the new memory amount, or click X to cancel the change.

Adjusting VM CPUs


Notes: Normally, a VM must be in a powered off state in order to adjust its number of CPUs. A VM’s CPUs can be adjusted while it is powered on if "hot-adding" has been enabled for the VM and if its operating system supports this feature.

A VM must use a virtual hardware version of 7 (vmx-7) or later in order to add CPUs while it is powered on.

A VM must use a virtual hardware version of 8 (vmx-8) or later in order to remove CPUs while it is powered on.

Navisite Cloud Director VM CPUs have a default clock speed of 2 GHz.

To adjust the number of CPUs for a VM:
  1. If necessary, verify that the VM is powered off, as follows:

    1. Shut down the VM by selecting Shutdown from the Power Off (Stop) drop-down menu at the top of the VM detail page.



    2. Power off the VM by selecting Power Off from the Power Off (Stop) drop-down menu at the top of the VM detail page.



  2. Click the "gear" icon in the "CPUs" section at the top of the VM detail page.



  3. Select the desired number of CPUs for the VM from the "CPUs" drop-down menu (up to the VM CPU limit).

  4. Note: Navisite Cloud Director allows a maximum of 16 CPUs per VM.


  5. Click the green check mark to specify the new number of CPUs, or click X to cancel the operation.

Adjusting VM Disk Space


Notes: A VM using virtual hardware version 4 (vmx-4) must be in a powered off state in order to adjust its disk space.

When changing a VM's disk space, the VM's operating system must also be configured to recognize the adjusted disk space. Contact your system administrator for assistance.

Adding a Disk to a VM


Notes: Navisite Cloud Director allows a maximum of 60 disks per VM.

Disks can be added to a VM while it is powered on if "hot-adding" has been enabled for the VM and if its operating system supports this feature.

A VM must use a virtual hardware version of 7 (vmx-7) or later in order to add disks while it is powered on.
  1. If necessary, verify that the VM is powered off, as follows:

    1. Shut down the VM by selecting Shutdown from the Power Off (Stop) drop-down menu at the top of the VM detail page.



    2. Power off the VM by selecting Power Off from the Power Off (Stop) drop-down menu at the top of the VM detail page.



  2. Click Disks in the "Hardware" section of the VM detail page. The "Disks" list displays a list of configured disks on the VM.



  3. Click +Add Disk. A new disk entry is added to the list.

  4. Specify the size of the disk in the "Size" column fields:

    1. Specify the numeric size of the disk in the "Size" column field. This amount must be greater than zero (0), and within VM storage limits.

    2. Select MB (megabytes) or GB (gigabytes) from the "Size" column drop-down menu to specify the unit of disk size measurement.

    3. Note: Navisite Cloud Director allows a maximum disk size of 4096 GB (4 terabytes).


    4. Click the green check mark to add the disk, or click X to cancel the operation.

Changing the Size of a Disk


Note: A VM's disk size cannot be decreased.

To change the size of an existing disk:
  1. If necessary, verify that the VM is powered off, as follows:

    1. Shut down the VM by selecting Shutdown from the Power Off (Stop) drop-down menu at the top of the VM detail page.

    2. Power off the VM by selecting Power Off from the Power Off (Stop) drop-down menu at the top of the VM detail page.

  2. In the "Disks" list, click the "gear" icon in the "Size" column for the desired disk.

  3. Specify the size of the disk in the "Size" column fields:

    1. Specify the numeric size of the disk in the "Size" column field. This amount must be greater than zero (0), and within VM storage limits.

    2. Select MB (megabytes) or GB (gigabytes) from the "Size" column drop-down menu to specify the unit of disk size measurement.

    3. Note: Navisite Cloud Director allows a maximum disk size of 4096 GB (4 terabytes).

  4. Click the green check mark to change the disk size, or click X to cancel the operation.

Changing a Disk's Storage Policy


Note: The VM's storage policy is a default; storage policy is applied at the level of each VM disk, and you can update it on a per-disk basis.

To change the default storage policy for an existing disk:
  1. If necessary, verify that the VM is powered off, as follows:

    1. Shut down the VM by selecting Shutdown from the Power Off (Stop) drop-down menu at the top of the VM detail page.

    2. Power off the VM by selecting Power Off from the Power Off (Stop) drop-down menu at the top of the VM detail page.

  2. In the "Disks" list, click the "gear" icon in the "Storage Policy" column for the desired disk.

  3. Select Standard or High to set the desired storage policy value for the disk.

  4. Click the green check mark to change the storage policy, or click X to cancel the operation.

Removing a Disk


Caution: Your VM's operating system may not recognize the removal of a disk from the VM using Navisite Cloud Director. Consider removing the disk from the VM using the operating system's disk management utility before removing the disk via NCD.

Notes: A VM disk cannot be deleted if it is the VM’s only disk and the VM is powered on. To remove a VM's only disk, you must first power off the VM.

To remove an existing disk from a VM:
  1. If necessary, verify that the VM is powered off, as follows:

    1. Shut down the VM by selecting Shutdown from the Power Off (Stop) drop-down menu at the top of the VM detail page.

    2. Power off the VM by selecting Power Off from the Power Off (Stop) drop-down menu at the top of the VM detail page.

  2. In the "Disks" list, click Delete in the list row corresponding to the disk to be removed.

Managing VM Network Interfaces


Note: Changes to a VM's network interfaces require that its governing vApp be shared. Without sharing explicitly configured for the vApp, only the owner or an Administrator can modify the vApp's networking. Refer to What is vApp sharing? for more information.

Adding/Editing a Network Interface Controller (NIC) for a VM

To add or edit a network interface controller (NIC) for a VM:
  1. Click Network Interfaces in the "Hardware" section of the VM detail page. The "Network Interfaces" list displays a list of the VM's NICs.



  2. To add a NIC to the VM, click +Add NIC. To edit an existing NIC, click the "gear" icon in the "Adapter Type" column of the "Network Interfaces" list for the NIC to be edited. The Add Network Interface page appears.

  3. For a new NIC, select the NIC adapter type from the "Adapter Type" drop-down menu. Note that this value cannot be changed after the NIC is created.

  4. Note: Windows Server® 2012 VMs require use of the VMXNET3 NIC adapter.

  5. From the "Network" drop-down menu, select the name of the network to which the NIC is to connect. The "IP Allocation" field appears.

  6. Select an IP allocation method from the "IP Allocation" drop-down menu. Available options include:

    • DHCP – Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol allows NCD to automatically assign an IP address to the NIC. The assigned address is taken from a defined range of IP addresses when the VM is powered on, and may be different for each assignment.

    • Static – IP Pool – allows NCD to automatically assign a static IP address to the NIC. The assigned address is taken from a defined set of IP addresses when the VM is powered on, and remains the same for each assignnment.

    • Static – Manual – assigns a user-defined static IP address to the NIC. If this option is selected, the "IP Address" field appears.

  7. If Static – Manual IP allocation is selected in Step 5, enter the IP address for the NIC in the "IP Address" field.

  8. Click Add/Edit Network Interface to add or edit the NIC. Click Cancel to cancel the operation.

Deleting a NIC for a VM


Notes: NICs that are designated as the primary network interface for a VM cannot be deleted.

A VM using virtual hardware version 4 (vmx-4) must be in a powered off state in order to delete a NIC.

To delete an existing NIC from a VM:
  1. If necessary, verify that the VM is powered off, as follows:

    1. Shut down the VM by selecting Shutdown from the Power Off (Stop) drop-down menu at the top of the VM detail page.



    2. Power off the VM by selecting Power Off from the Power Off (Stop) drop-down menu at the top of the VM detail page.



  2. Click Delete in the "Network Interfaces" list row corresponding to the NIC to be deleted.

Designating a Primary NIC for a VM

Each VM has a single NIC that is designated as its primary network interface. To select another NIC to be the primary network interface, click the "pencil" icon in the "Network Interfaces" list "Primary" column corresponding to the desired NIC.
