NCD – Upgrading the Zerto Virtual Manager (ZVM) Service and Virtual Replication Appliances (VRAs)

The Zerto Virtual Manager (ZVM) is a management and control console Windows® service that runs on a Microsoft® Windows virtual machine (VM) within a vCenter environment. In order for a customer site to be able to pair with a Navisite Cloud Director (NCD) site for disaster recovery, a single ZVM must be installed and configured at each site managed by a vCenter Server.

When upgrading the ZVM service, the Virtual Replication Appliances (VRAs) that were installed in the previous version are not upgraded automatically. It is recommended that you always upgrade the VRAs to the latest version on your site.

Important: Before performing these upgrades, it is recommended that you create a vCenter snapshot of the Windows VM that hosts the ZVM in case it becomes necessary to revert back to your original configuration.

Before performing these upgrades, all Virtual Protection Groups (VPGs) should have a status of "Protected."

To upgrade the ZVM service and VRAs:
  1. Open a console session to the Microsoft Windows VM hosting the ZVM service.

  2. In the console session, open a web browser and navigate to:

  3. Locate and click the Click here to download the ZVM package link to download a .zip file containing the latest ZVM installation media.

  4. When the ZVM download is complete, extract the files to the VM's local disk drive.

  5. When the file extraction is complete, locate and start the Zerto Virtual Replication Installer.exe file. The Upgrade Zerto Virtual Replication window appears.

  6. Note: If the Microsoft.NET Framework is not installed on the VM, it is installed as part of the Zerto Virtual Replication installation. After it is installed, reboot the VM and restart the Zerto Virtual Replication Installer.exe file.

  7. Click NEXT. The Upgrade Zerto Virtual Replication window displays the Zerto End User License Agreement.

  8. To proceed, review the license agreement and select the I accept the license agreement checkbox.

  9. Click NEXT. The installer utility validates vCenter compatibility and the ZVM peer API version, and displays the results in the Upgrade Zerto Virtual Replication window.

If any errors or warnings are displayed, perform any necessary changes and click RECHECK.

  10. Click RUN to begin the upgrade. The Upgrade Zerto Virtual Replication window displays the upgrade's progress.

During the upgrade process, Windows may prompt you to install necessary components. Click Install to do so, if necessary.

  11. When the upgrade is complete, select the Open the Zerto Virtual Manager interface checkbox, and click DONE.

The Zerto Virtual Manager Web Client Login window opens in a browser.

  12. Log into the ZVM service using the username and password specified during the initial ZVM installation. The Zerto Virtual Manager window appears with the "DASHBOARD" tab displayed.

  13. In the Zerto Virtual Manager window, select the "SETUP" tab.

  14. At the "SETUP" tab, select the "VRAs" box at the upper left side of the tab.

  15. In the VRA list, select the checkbox corresponding to each VRA to be upgraded.

  16. Select Upgrade from the "More" drop-down list in the upper right corner of the "SETUP" tab. The Upgrade VRAs pop-up window appears, listing the selected VRAs.

  17. Click UPGRADE SELECTED VRAs.

The VRA upgrade progress is displayed at the "SETUP" tab.

For VRAs protecting virtual machines, a delta sync is performed following the upgrade.

For VRAs recovering virtual machines, a bitmap sync is performed following the upgrade.
