NCD – Viewing and Configuring VPN Connections

Navisite Cloud Director® allows you to view your configured Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), and allows you to use the VMware® vCloud Director® Tenant Portal to configure them. VPNs can be configured to allow secure traffic between Virtual DataCenter (VDC) networks, or between your on-premise networks and vDC networks.

Viewing VPN Connections for a vDC

To view the VPN connections maintained by a vDC:
  1. Log into Navisite Cloud Director. The Dashboard page appears.

  2. Click "vDataCenters" in the navigation pane at the left side of the page. The vDataCenters page appears, displaying a list of your vDCs.

  3. Click the name of the desired vDC in the 'Name' column of the vDC list. The vDataCenter detail page appears.

  4. Click "VPN" beneath the 'Network Services' heading to view your configured VPN connections.

Viewing IPsec and L2 VPN Connections

Click the IPsec or L2VPN selector above the list to view IPsec or L2 VPN connections.

About IPsec Connections

IPsec is a protocol suite for securing communications at the IP Packet Layer. IPsec also provides methods and attributes for the negotiation of security associations and key distribution. The IPsec domain of interpretation (DOI) is a document containing definitions for the security parameters required for the SA and IKE negotiation of a VPN tunnel.

About L2 VPN Connections

Layer 2 VPN (L2 VPN) connections operate with Layer 2 connectivity (i.e., without IP routing). Traffic is carried by Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and then converted back to Layer 2 format at the receiving site. Different Layer 2 formats can be configured at the sending and receiving sites.

Configuring VPN Connections

To configure or modify your VPN connections, click Configure in Tenant Portal above the VPN list. The vCloud Director Tenant Portal opens in a new browser window, allowing you to add or edit your VPN connections.

Troubleshooting VPN Connections

Successfully creating and maintaining VPN connections between on-premise networks and vDC networks relies on the proper configuration of settings including network addresses, shared key values, and Edge Gateway parameters. See Troubleshooting Third Party VPN Connections for details.
