A firewall rule is an instruction dictating how network traffic should be handled for specific criteria. A rule consists of a source address and port, a destination address and port, network protocol, and an action. Firewall rules can be very restrictive, allowing two machines to communicate on a specified port using a specified protocol, or they can be very open, allowing all traffic on any port with any protocol.
